Article Submissions

Are you interested in participating in the Field Grade Leader as a guest contributor? Here are a few guidelines to point you in the right direction as you start work on the project:

How to Get Your Article Accepted

1. Articles will be selected for publication based on readability and relevance to the Field Grade Leader audience. Quality articles generally:

  • Identify a problem and provide practical recommendations and solutions.
  • Refer to what others have said about your topic and then explain what distinguishes your approach or suggestions.

2. The target for submissions is approximately 1,000 words, though longer and shorter articles are acceptable.
3. While authors tend to be Army officers, please note that the site has a joint readership, so it is helpful to speak to all services, not just the Army.

How to Format Your Article

1. Include a title.
2. Include hyperlinks or footnotes as required.
3. Include a high-quality photograph (approximately 100K), with photographer attribution and photo date, to accompany your article. If unavailable, we will provide a photo to accompany your article.
4. Include a short bio to accompany your submission. Here is an example:

MAJ XXX is currently a PhD Student at the Colorado School of Mines. An Armor officer, he has served in Armor and Infantry Brigade Combat Teams with operational experience in Iraq and Africa. He completed his KD time in 3/1AD (ABCT) and recently redeployed from Iraq as the Joint Command Inspector General for CJFLCC-OIR and 1st Armored Division.

5. Articles should be submitted via email to fieldgradeleader@gmail.com in Microsoft Word format.
6. Submit them to your public affairs officer for approval as required.
7. Please note: We do not accept simultaneous submissions (i.e. do not submit your article to multiple sites).

How We Will Work Together to Edit Your Article

1. Within about five business days, an editor will contact you about whether or not your article is a good match for The Field Grade Leader.
2. Within the next two weeks, an editor will provide comments and suggestions for improvement. These comments are designed to help you better communicate your ideas to reach your audience. You are not required to make all suggestions, but please remember that the editors genuinely want to improve your product.
3. We ask for edits to be done within five business days unless you contact us to ask for an extension due to extenuating circumstances.
4. We proofread and then publish your article within a few weeks. In some cases, the article might go through another round of edits if deemed necessary.
